Frankly, those skills came in handy.
When I started writing romance I knew it wouldn’t be an overnight success story. Life had already taught me plenty of lessons in patience and fortitude. I also knew that starting at the bottom of any ladder requires a climb.
I received some sound advice before I started -- write a weekly serial.
I realize the publishing landscape has changed over time, but releasing weekly forced me into a few good habits:
-I learned how to keep promises to my readers. They were expecting a weekly release because I had told them as much.
-Writing regularly taught me to do the work even if I didn’t feel like it. Not everyday is going to have the rush that comes with typing THE END.
-I needed to write lots of hooks and cliffs to get readers to buy the next 10-15k installment at $2.99 a pop.
-It taught me to be uber conscious of my time. I knew I needed to manage it properly to maintain my schedule.
In December I was really assessing my life goals.
